The Most Overrated Burgers in NYC (And What to Get Instead)
Some of NYC's most famous burgers are coasting on reputation. We've eaten them all, scored them honestly, and have no sacred cows. The Minetta Tavern Black Label Burger scores a 6.5. Monkey Bar is a 5.8. These are the burgers that don't deserve the hype — and what to eat instead.
This isn't contrarian for the sake of it. Every score in our system is based on the same criteria applied to 81+ burgers across NYC. When a $38 "legendary" burger scores in the Solid tier, you should know about it before spending that money.
The Overrated List
Minetta Tavern — Black Label Burger
Greenwich Village · ~$38 · Dry Aged
The Black Label has been on every "best burger in NYC" list for over a decade. It's made with a proprietary dry-aged blend topped with caramelized onions on a Balthazar bun. Sounds incredible. The problem: the flavor balance isn't there. The dry-aging produces funk without enough savoriness to back it up, and at $38, you're paying a premium for the name. The regular Minetta Burger (7.9) is actually a better burger for $5 less.
Eat this instead: Red Hook Tavern (9.9, ~$28) — superior dry-aged burger at a lower price.
Monkey Bar
Midtown · $$$ · Thick
Monkey Bar trades on its Midtown glamour and Mad Men-era ambiance. The burger itself is notably worse than what you'll find at Au Cheval or 4 Charles — both of which share DNA through the same restaurant group's influence on NYC's upscale burger scene. At 5.8, this is firmly in Average tier. The room is beautiful. The burger is forgettable.
Eat this instead: Au Cheval (8.7) in Tribeca or 4 Charles (9.5) in West Village.
Fairfax
West Village · $$ · Thick
Fairfax gets mentioned on burger lists because of its pedigree — it's the reincarnation of the old Bar Sardine burger. The problem is that what arrives feels more like a sandwich than a burger. The patty doesn't assert itself against the toppings, and the whole thing lacks the beefy punch you want from something marketed as one of the village's best burgers. It's fine. It's not a destination.
Eat this instead: Golden Swan (9.3) or Emmett's Dry Aged (8.8), both in the West Village.
Peter Luger
Williamsburg · $$$$ · Dry Aged
Peter Luger is a legendary steakhouse. The steak deserves its reputation. The burger does not. Available only at lunch, the burger trades entirely on the Luger name and the quality of their beef. But a great steak cut doesn't automatically make a great burger — the seasoning, construction, and overall experience don't justify the trip. You're better off going to Red Hook Tavern, which is in the same borough and scores more than double.
Eat this instead: Red Hook Tavern (9.9) is 15 minutes away and is the best burger in NYC.
The Takeaway
Reputation and quality aren't the same thing. A burger that was great in 2015 might be coasting in 2026. We update our rankings continuously, and every score reflects our most recent visit. If a famous burger earns a low score, it's because we ate it and it didn't deliver — not because we're trying to be provocative.
